Chapter Sixteen

We’d briefed Mike fully during the drive to Skara Brae about MI5 and what had happened at the hospital. He’d looked distinctly horrified as we’d filled him in about the extent of the reach of the Overseers and what they were capable of. When we’d arrived, we’d parked the Audi a good couple of miles away down the beach from Skara Brae to be on the safe side. Now the three of us were trudging along the shoreline through sheets of squalling rain.

Jack, burdened down by all the kit he was carrying, looked like a movie action hero for whom Christmas had come early. He’d discovered a weapon store in the Audi’s boot where the spare wheel should have been. Thanks to that, he was now carrying half an armoury on his back.

‘Is all that stuff really necessary? I asked.

Jack patted the gun I’d been using, to which he’d bolted god knew what on to from the arms store. ‘We need to be prepared for anything, so I’ve attached a grenade launcher to this HK416 carbine you managed to snag yourself.’

‘Oh, is that what that type of gun is?’

‘Hell, don’t let any special forces officer hear you refer to it as just a gun. This is the Navy SEAL’s weapon of choice and designed to take all sorts of attachments. The fact the Overseers are equipped with these would suggest that these mercs are experienced soldiers.’

‘With infinite funds at their disposal, I wouldn’t expect anything less,’ I replied.

‘And to take on MI5 agents shows that they really don’t give a flying fuck about anyone standing in their way,’ Mike said.

‘Which is why I’ve had to stay off the grid,’ I replied. ‘Every time I’ve run into them, people have died…’

I made sure I didn’t look anywhere in Jack’s direction, but I saw him giving me a sideways glance.

‘It’s not too late to turn round,’ he said.

‘Could you really live with not knowing?’ I asked. ‘With Earth Song, whatever it’s about exactly, we may have a way of saving our planet from an alien race determined to exterminate us.’

Jack shook his head at me. ‘Yeah, there’s no other option really.’

Mike nodded. ‘MI5 aside, the thing I don’t understand is why this island isn’t crawling with special forces by now. There’s no sign of any soldiers on the ground yet.’

‘That’s a good point,’ Jack replied. ‘You’d have thought blowing up a hospital would had initiated a serious military response from your government by now.’

‘Nothing on the news either – at least going by what we heard on the way over here, guys,’ I said. ‘There must be a news blackout.’

‘There’s probably an operation underway, and the authorities are keeping quiet until all the Overseers soldiers have been neutralised,’ Jack said.

‘But surely Alvarez will have planned for a counter-attack?’ I asked.

‘However well armed the Overseers are, they can’t hope to hold off a response from the SAS, who would no doubt be the first sent in to deal with a threat like this,’ Jack replied.
